ClimbingNarc reports that Dead Point Magazine now allows you to save the online magazine as a PDF for offline reading.

I’ve been complaining about this for a while, but unfortunately they’re not quite there yet. You can’t just click on a link for the PDF download. Instead, you have to load up the entire online magazine seeing page-by-page thumbnails and once the process is complete, you can then save the mag as PDF.

Part of the way there is better than nothing I guess…

If the goal of a free magazine is wide distribution, then why are they making hard for as many people as possible to read it?

My advice: publish straight to PDF. Put it on Amazon S3 or a CDN and allow us to link straight to it. Immediately more distribution that costs less than printing a paper magazine that will increase revenue from advertisers.

Climbing Magazine announced its 2008 Golden Piton Awards. Some of the winners included Chris Sharma for his send of Jumbo Love (5.15b), Beth Rodden for the FA of Meltdown in Yosemite, and Paul Robinson for his more than 80 problems rated V11 or higher last year.

As with last yearâ??s GP awards, weâ??ve prioritized vision (being the first, or interpreting old testpieces in a fresh, unflinching way) over volume, with an eye toward honoring those recipients who havenâ??t yet sat at the table. We know each selection wonâ??t be without controversy â?? we each have our heroes â?? but Climbingâ??s editorial crew sat down, talked to our sources, and wrapped our heads around the subjective animal known as â??climbing achievement,â? to bring you the trend-setting-sends and highlights of 2008.

While print magazines are rapidly becoming less and less relevant, some of us still subscribe (like me!) and would like to see them improve.

I received an email from Climbing Magazine with a link to their annual reader survey for both subscribers and non-subscribers. The survey is rather long, but I highly recommend filling it out and letting them know how to improve the magazine.

Instead of bitching about the content amongst ourselves, it’s always better to provide the magazine with some constructive criticism.

If you completely fill out the survey, you’ll be entered into a drawing to win gear from Millet.

The survey closes on 12/31/08.
