As I mentioned in my last post, I recently moved to Blacksburg, Virginia. Last weekend I hit the New for a quick day trip. The nice part about being only 1.5 hours away is I feel a little more relaxed there and can enjoy the climbing more. When I’d make the 5.5 hour trip from Northern Virginia, I really felt the pressure of trying to get as much climbing done in a weekend as possible. Now, being so close, if the weather is marginal I can still go and not be overly disappointed if I get rained out. And as anyone who has climbed at the New knows, it rains quite often.
We got some nice climbing in Saturday at Bubba City. Starting at Headless Wall we moved our way up (or down?) the cliff line and finished up at Bubba Buttress. Probably the most enjoyable climb of the day was Chicks in the Woods (11a) which is either on Ames Wall or Central Bubba (don’t have my guidebook with me). I won’t give any beta here, but it was a very technical face climb with a couple of very unique moves on it. Highly recommended route!
