Ade Miller offers some tips on how to succeed on winter alpine routes.
Rehearse the climb. If youâ??re trying do a winter ascent of a line that climbs a summer route then climb the route in summer at least once. Getting off route in winter will waste time and saps your momentum. Iâ??ve failed more than once after a slowing of upward movement turned into full blown retreat.

Nice artikel!
The Adventure Channel
if i wanted to do a winter ascent of a route that could be climbed in the summer, I’d probably just wait until the summer.
BJ, yeah, I was wondering if someone would comment on that one. All of the tips in the article are good, but the one I quoted seemed intriguing. I guess from a descent point of view it makes sense, but I’m likely not inclined to do the route twice!
I mean come on, let’s be honest, winter is just killing time until it gets warm enough to climb rock. no one actually ENJOYS ice climbing 😉
BJ, you are a wise man – I never can really explain to people why I ice climb…
